About the Edison Pen Co.
The Edison Pen Company is a small independently owned business specializing in fine writing instruments.
I have been turning wood, acrylics, and metal for the last ten years or so, and around 2005, I decided to turn my attention to pens.
At first, like many penturners, I focused on wood as a material. I quickly realized that I really had no ambition to do craft shows, and I started re-focusing on a different target audience for my pens - the fountain pen enthusiast.
So I started collecting good quality fountain pens, which became quite an addiction...Sailor, Bexley, Parker, Namiki, Danitrio, and others. I quickly realized that what made these pens unique was not just the materials (which are hardly ever wood), not just the aesthetics and shape, but the NIB!
So I got away from wood, focused on ebonites and celluloid as a material, and most importantly, figured out how to offer top quality nibs.
The nibs that most of my suppliers provided were not great, and I noticed that they were nothing compared to the penmakers that I mentioned above. So I decided to do two things. One is to learn how to adjust my nibs, and the other was to find suppliers who can offer top quality nibs.
I decided that if I could not adjust my nibs to write just as well as the commercial penmakers, then I would not pursue penmaking. What would be the point?
This led me to learn a good bit about how to take my nibs and get them buttery smooth, and with proper flow.
It also led me to find sources for top quality steel and gold nibs.
So that's where I am today. My shop is a small operation with four lathes and some other machinery.
Along with making pens, I have another passion, marquetry furniture, which you can see here.
